Two Houston-area men will spend the rest of their lives behind bars after a botched murder-for-hire plot left a Katy man fighting for his life. Michael Seery, 43, and Ricardo Obando Jr., 52, were convicted of conspiracy and murder for their roles in the plot.
The twisted scheme unfolded over months, with Seery hiring Obando to kill a man he believed had an affair with his wife while he was in prison. But in a stunning twist, Obando targeted the wrong person – a man who just happened to be driving to work on Highway 99.
The intended victim, who had moved out of the residence Seery believed he lived in, testified at the trial, along with Seery’s wife. Cell phone evidence showed Obando’s extensive surveillance and a failed attempt on the victim before the fateful shooting.
Seery, who was angry about the affair 12 years prior, had paid Obando through his business and had even manufactured the silencer used in the crime with a 3D printer. Obando shot the victim multiple times, but miraculously, he survived with gunshots wounds to his neck, torso, and hand.
