Irish Man Caught at U.S. Border
ALBANY, NEW YORK – Michael A. Connors, age 36, and a citizen of Ireland, was sentenced today to time served (24 days in jail) for attempted illegal re-entry into the United States.
Connors, who was arrested on June 24, 2017, at the Champlain Port of Entry in New York, admitted to attempting to illegally return to the U.S. after being removed to Ireland on June 15, 2011.
According to Acting United States Attorney Grant C. Jaquith and Steven Bronson, United States Customs and Border Protection Port Director for the Champlain Port of Entry, Connors did not have permission to return to the United States following his prior removal.
Connors was remanded to the custody of the Department of Homeland Security for removal proceedings following the sentencing.
This case was investigated by United States Customs and Border Protection and prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Edward P. Grogan.
Connors’ attempted re-entry into the United States is a serious offense, and it’s lucky that he was caught before he could cause any more harm. This is a reminder that our borders are secure and that we will not tolerate anyone attempting to break our laws.
This case serves as a warning to anyone considering attempting to re-enter the United States without permission. We will continue to work tirelessly to keep our borders safe and secure.
