Alfonso Randall, Felon in Possession of a Firearm, Wisconsin 2022

MADISON, WIS. – Alfonso Randall, 40, of Janesville, Wisconsin, is headed to federal prison for three years after being sentenced by U.S. District Judge William M. Conley for being a felon in possession of a firearm. The sentence comes after Randall pleaded guilty to the charge on October 20, 2022, but the road to conviction reveals a pattern of brazen disregard for the law and a dangerous escalation of behavior.

The trouble began on February 20, 2021, when Randall actively interfered with a lawful traffic stop conducted by Janesville police. But it didn’t stop there. Randall then took to social media, posting videos showcasing his defiance. These weren’t simple complaints; they included explicit threats directed at law enforcement, coupled with him brandishing a handgun directly at the camera. He also posted footage of himself firing a handgun at a shooting range, essentially broadcasting his illegal firearm access.

Randall’s past is riddled with convictions that should have kept him far from firearms. In 2001 and 2002, he was convicted of state drug trafficking offenses. That wasn’t enough to deter him. In 2009, federal court handed down a 100-month sentence for distributing crack cocaine. Clearly, repeated brushes with the law failed to instill any sense of accountability.

During sentencing, Judge Conley addressed Randall’s claim that he was attempting to “hold police accountable.” The judge was unimpressed. While acknowledging the sentiment, Conley pointed out that Randall ignored direct orders from officers to cease his interference. “If Randall wants to hold other people to being law abiding, he needed to obey the law himself,” Conley stated. The court also expressed serious concern over the fact that Randall kept firearms hidden in his home, accessible to teenagers who resided there, creating a dangerous situation for all involved.

The investigation, spearheaded by the Janesville Police Department and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), uncovered a clear pattern of reckless behavior and a disregard for public safety. Assistant U.S. Attorney Corey Stephan skillfully prosecuted the case, ensuring Randall faced the consequences of his actions. The search of Randall’s residence revealed more than just a single illegally possessed firearm; multiple weapons were discovered concealed throughout the house.

This case is part of the Department of Justice’s Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a comprehensive program designed to reduce violent crime and gun violence by fostering collaboration between law enforcement and communities. Launched in 2021, the reinvigorated PSN focuses on building trust, supporting community organizations, prioritizing strategic enforcement, and meticulously measuring results. For Randall, however, the results are clear: three years in federal prison, and a stark reminder that the law applies to everyone, even those who claim to be its watchdogs.
