Janitor Sentenced 20 Years For Enticing Minors Online
A 30-year-old Rapid City man has been sentenced to 20 years in federal prison for using the internet to entice minors. Casey James Godfrey, a former janitor at Pinedale Elementary School, was sentenced on June 3, 2015.
According to court documents, between July 2013 and January 2014, Godfrey used the internet to entice a 13-year-old female and a 15-year-old female to email him several photographs of them in various stages of undressing, including nude and partially nude photos.
Godfrey’s sentence, handed down by Chief Judge Jeffrey L. Viken, includes 20 years of supervised release and a $100 special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund.
Acting United States Attorney Randolph J. Seiler praised the sentence, saying, ‘Preventing the sexual exploitation and abuse of children is a top priority of our office, and the 20-year federal prison term that was handed down should reinforce that there will be severe criminal consequences for Internet predators.’
The investigation was conducted by the Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force, and the case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Sarah B. Collins. Godfrey was immediately turned over to the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service.
Godfrey’s actions have sent shockwaves through the community, with many calling for increased vigilance in protecting children from online predators. The case serves as a stark reminder of the importance of monitoring children’s online activity and educating them about the dangers of the internet.
As the community comes to terms with Godfrey’s sentence, advocates are urging parents and guardians to take a proactive approach in safeguarding their children from online exploitation.
