Jason Potter, Meth Trafficking, Kansas City MO, 2023

KANSAS CITY, MO – A Braymer, Missouri man is facing three decades behind bars after a federal court sentenced him Wednesday for his central role in a significant methamphetamine distribution network. Jason M. Potter, 41, received a 30-year sentence without the possibility of parole from U.S. District Judge Roseann Ketchmark.

Potter was convicted in February of one count of conspiracy to distribute methamphetamine and one count of possessing methamphetamine with the intent to distribute. The case stemmed from a July 2020 operation where Potter and his co-defendant, Daniel Dryden, 52, of Clinton, were observed conducting a deal at the America’s Best Value Inn in Lee’s Summit. Dryden is already serving a three-year sentence for his involvement.

According to investigators, Lee’s Summit police officers observed Potter’s black 2009 Nissan Maxima parked at the motel on July 15, 2020. Potter and Dryden emerged from the hotel, with Potter placing a computer case and shopping bag containing drugs into the vehicle. A subsequent traffic stop yielded 4.8 grams of methamphetamine on Potter and a staggering 648.6 grams inside the computer bag, along with over $3,000 in cash. Potter also had $3,610 in cash on his person at the time of his arrest.

Court documents reveal Potter had essentially turned the America’s Best Value Inn into his “main hub” for drug distribution. He leveraged a friendship with the motel manager to secure rooms and operate with relative impunity. The investigation showed a sustained effort to move substantial quantities of meth throughout the region. This wasn’t a small-time operation; the sheer volume of drugs seized points to a well-established network.

The bust was a joint effort by the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), the Lee’s Summit Police Department, and the Springfield Police Department. Assistant U.S. Attorneys Maureen A. Brackett and Stephanie C. Bradshaw prosecuted the case, building a solid case that led to the lengthy sentence.

The 30-year sentence sends a clear message: those who flood our communities with methamphetamine will face serious consequences. Potter’s operation wasn’t just about profit; it fueled addiction and wreaked havoc on the lives of countless individuals. This conviction, and the substantial prison term, represents a significant blow to that criminal enterprise.
