Defendant Sentenced to Four Years in Prison for Selling Firearms

BOSTON – In a move to crack down on illicit firearms trafficking, a Brazilian national was sentenced yesterday in federal court in Boston for selling 11 firearms, including one equipped with a large capacity magazine and another with an obliterated serial number.

According to the Department of Justice, USAO, Joao Henrique Martins, 36, of Boston, Massachusetts, was sentenced to four years in prison for his role in selling the firearms that could have potentially been used in violent crimes. Martins, who is a Brazilian national, had pleaded guilty to the charges earlier this year.

The indictment alleges that Martins sold the firearms to an undercover agent, including one that had a large capacity magazine and another that had been modified to conceal its serial number. Large capacity magazines are banned under federal law, and the sale of firearms with obliterated serial numbers is a federal offense.
