Joe Hofer, 52, Sentenced for Destroying Bald Eagle Nest in South Dakota
Pierre, South Dakota – In a shocking turn of events, a local man has been sentenced to federal probation and a hefty fine for his role in destroying a bald eagle nest in Lake County, South Dakota.
Joe Hofer, 52, was found guilty of violating the Bald and Golden Eagle Protection Act after using farm equipment owned by the Cambridge Hutterian Brethren (CHB) to take down trees on property owned by the CHB. Unfortunately, one of the trees contained an active eagle nest, which was destroyed as a result.
According to sources, Hofer did not possess the necessary permit to take down the eagle’s nest, which is strictly protected under federal law. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the South Dakota Game, Fish and Parks investigated the incident.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Meghan Dilges prosecuted the case, which involved a complex web of farm equipment and property ownership.
On January 13, 2025, Chief Judge Roberto A. Lange of the U.S. District Court sentenced Hofer to one year of federal probation, as well as a $1,200 fine and a $25 special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund.
The incident raises serious concerns about the protection of bald and golden eagles, which are threatened species in the United States.
Hofer’s sentencing serves as a reminder of the importance of adhering to federal regulations and respecting the natural habitats of protected species.
