Wessington Springs Man Sentenced for Firearm Offense

A federal judge sentenced Jonathan Tyrrell, 54, to 12 months and one day in prison for possessing a firearm as a prohibited person. The Wessington Springs, South Dakota, resident was also ordered to serve 18 months of supervised release, pay a $2,000 fine, and pay a $100 special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund.

Tyrrell was convicted of the offense on February 12, 2013, after pleading guilty to the charge. The incident that led to the conviction took place on December 15, 2011, when Tyrrell was stopped by the Jerauld County Sheriff’s office.

During the traffic stop, law enforcement officers found methamphetamine, marijuana, and four firearms in Tyrrell’s vehicle. A subsequent test revealed that Tyrrell had used controlled substances.

The case was investigated by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Kathryn N. Rich.

Tyrrell was taken into custody by the U.S. Marshal’s Service immediately following the sentencing.

Tyrrell’s crime was committed on December 15, 2011, and he was sentenced on May 1, 2013. He is currently serving his sentence in a federal prison.
