Methamphetamine Possession Lands Mendota Heights Man in Prison
A 43-year-old Mendota Heights man has been sentenced to 120 months in prison for possessing more than 50 grams of high-purity methamphetamine with intent to distribute it.
Joseph Benjamin Thomas was sentenced by United States District Court Chief Judge Michael J. Davis on one count of possession with intent to distribute methamphetamine in violation of federal law. The sentence was handed down earlier today in federal court.
According to court documents, Thomas possessed with intent to distribute in excess of 50 grams of methamphetamine between February 1 and April 16, 2012. He pleaded guilty to the charge on July 11, 2012, as part of a plea agreement.
The case was the result of an investigation by the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s Joint Terrorism Task Force, which includes the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives; U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s Homeland Security Investigations; the University of Minnesota Police Department; the Minneapolis Police Department; and the St. Paul Police Department, with significant assistance from the Fairmont Police Department and the Minnesota Department of Corrections.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Andrew R. Winter prosecuted the case, bringing Thomas to justice for his role in the methamphetamine distribution ring.
The sentencing of Thomas serves as a reminder of the ongoing fight against methamphetamine trafficking in Minnesota and the efforts of law enforcement agencies to bring those responsible to justice.
Thomas will serve his 120-month sentence, a significant penalty for his role in the distribution of high-purity methamphetamine in the state.
