Nebraskans are breathing a sigh of relief as a child predator is taken off the streets. Kevin Miranda-Yepez, 26, was sentenced to 48 months in federal prison for possessing child pornography. The Mexican national’s crime spree was brought to an end on March 21, 2023 when Senior United States District Judge Joseph F. Bataillon handed down the sentence in federal court in Omaha, Nebraska.
The charges against Miranda-Yepez stem from an investigation launched by Homeland Security Investigations in March 2016. The agency received a Cybertip involving an image of child pornography, which was traced to an IP address in Omaha. On December 8, 2016, a search warrant was executed at Miranda-Yepez’s residence, resulting in the seizure of his phone. Forensic analysis of the phone revealed 76 images of child pornography, depicting children as young as five years old in sexually explicit conduct.
During his interview, Miranda-Yepez admitted to searching for and downloading child pornography from the Internet. The horrific images were a stark reminder of the horrors that children are subjected to, and the need for vigilance in protecting them.
As part of his sentence, Miranda-Yepez will be required to register as a sex offender if he remains in the United States. He will also be subject to a 10-year term of supervised release upon his release from prison. With his likely deportation at the completion of his prison term, Nebraskans can rest a little easier knowing that this child predator will be held accountable for his heinous crimes.
The case against Miranda-Yepez was brought as part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative launched in May 2006 to combat the growing epidemic of child sexual exploitation and abuse. This program marshals federal, state, and local resources to locate, apprehend, and prosecute individuals who exploit children via the Internet, as well as to identify and rescue victims.
Homeland Security Investigations, a division of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, led the investigation into Miranda-Yepez’s activities. The agency’s efforts have helped to bring a measure of justice to the victims of this child predator’s crimes.
