Kidnapping and Robbery in Philly
Three Philadelphia men, Salahudin Shaheed, 34, Khayree Gay, 31, and Basil Buie, 23, were charged with kidnapping and attempted robbery of a jewelry store employee, announced United States Attorney Zane David Memeger.
The superseding indictment, filed in federal court, alleges that Shaheed recruited Gay and Buie to rob the National Watch and Diamond Exchange, at 101 S. 8th Street in Philadelphia, to obtain luxury watches, jewelry, and money. The defendants conducted surveillance of the store and its employees from a parking lot at 733 Chestnut Street, to identify and then, in disguise, abduct an employee.
On April 3, 2015, Shaheed identified the employee to target but postponed the robbery when the victim entered the parking lot accompanied by other persons. The next day, the defendants returned and kidnapped the employee, with Shaheed assaulting her with a Taser, according to the indictment.
Each of the defendants faces a maximum possible statutory sentence of life in prison, five years of supervised release, a fine of up to $750,000, and a $300 special assessment if convicted.
The case was investigated by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives and is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Jeanine Linehan.
Shaheed, Gay, and Buie are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty. The charges against them are merely accusations, and they are entitled to a fair trial.
As the investigation continues, the community is reminded that kidnapping and robbery are serious crimes that can have devastating consequences for the victims and their families.
The case highlights the importance of community engagement and cooperation in preventing and solving crimes. Citizens are encouraged to report any suspicious activity to the authorities.
