Ladson Man Indicted on Fentanyl Charges
A 60-year-old man from Ladson, South Carolina, has been indicted on a serious drug charge after a federal grand jury returned an indictment in Charleston.
Robert Bryan Mansfield, a resident of Ladson, is accused of conspiracy to possess with intent to distribute and to distribute fentanyl, a highly addictive and potent opioid. If convicted, Mansfield could face a fine of up to $10,000,000 and life imprisonment.
According to the indictment, the case was investigated by ICE-Homeland Security Investigations, the Drug Enforcement Administration, the United States Postal Inspection Service, the Dorchester County Sheriff’s Office, and the Charleston County Sheriff’s Office.
The case is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Nick Bianchi, who is based in the Charleston office. United States Attorney Beth Drake emphasized that all charges are mere accusations and that Mansfield is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
The indictment is a significant development in the ongoing efforts to combat the opioid epidemic in the state. Fentanyl is a synthetic opioid that is often mixed with other substances and has been linked to numerous overdose deaths in South Carolina.
