MINNEAPOLIS – In a tough blow to the Latin Kings gang, Jorge Olivares, also known as ‘Stomper,’ has been sentenced to 50 months behind bars followed by two years of supervised release for his illegal possession of a firearm. This sentence was announced today by Acting U.S. Attorney Joseph H. Thompson.
“The defendant is a violent member of the Latin Kings who has repeatedly shot people and brought violence to our streets,” said Thompson, underscoring that Olivares’s actions demonstrated a flagrant disregard for the law. “Whether it’s the Highs, the Lows, the Bloods, or the Latin Kings, at the federal level we will continue to use every tool we have to put violent gang members behind bars.”
Olivares, 23, has a history of violence as evidenced by his 2018 conviction for first-degree aggravated assault and first-degree aggravated robbery, where he shot two victims and stole their car. He also carried out a drive-by shooting, captured on video, while shouting the gang slogan “King Love” and flashing a gang sign.
The sentence comes after Olivares was caught with a Springfield Armory Hellcat 9mm semiautomatic pistol ready to fire, within easy reach in his vehicle. The pistol had one round in the chamber and twelve rounds in the magazine. Alongside the firearm, officers discovered more than 6 grams of cocaine, further highlighting Olivares’s involvement in illegal activities.
At sentencing, U.S. District Judge Ann D. Montgomery emphasized the severity of the defendant’s criminal history, noting that his pattern of violence was a cause for concern. “It doesn’t usually end well” when individuals continue to appear in court with escalating violence, she commented.
This case was a result of an investigation led by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF), supported by the Bureau of Criminal Apprehension (BCA), the United States Marshals Service (USMS), the Minneapolis Police Department (MPD), and the Richfield Police Department. Assistant U.S. Attorney David B. Green prosecuted the case.
