Law and Order
A Lincoln County man has been accused of bringing harm to his community with the possession and distribution of two highly addictive and often deadly substances. Bert Tackett, 56, of Alkol, pleaded guilty to a federal drug crime, a move that could have severe consequences for the local resident.
According to court documents, the South Charleston Police conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle in which Tackett was a passenger on February 8, 2021. During the stop, officers discovered approximately 117 grams of a mixture/substance containing fentanyl and 41.989 grams of methamphetamine. Tackett admitted to law enforcement that he intended to distribute the controlled substances.
Additionally, officers recovered a Bersa Thunder 9mm handgun from inside the vehicle. When Tackett was arrested at his Alkol residence on June 15, 2021, law enforcement found two bags of suspected fentanyl weighing approximately 31.123 grams and 1.244 grams, a bag of suspected methamphetamine weighing approximately 27.238 grams, and two loaded firearms inside his residence.
Tackett pleaded guilty to a single-count indictment charging him with possession with intent to distribute 40 grams or more of fentanyl and five grams or more of methamphetamine. He faces a mandatory minimum of five years and up to 40 years in prison when sentenced on November 3, 2021.
Acting United States Attorney Lisa G. Johnston commended the excellent investigative work of the South Charleston Police Department, the Metropolitan Drug Enforcement Network Team (MDENT), the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), and the U.S. Marshals Service. United States District Judge Joseph R. Goodwin presided over the hearing. Assistant United States Attorney Nick Miller is handling the prosecution.
Tackett’s guilty plea brings to light the widespread issue of drug trafficking in our community. As we continue to investigate and prosecute those responsible, we urge residents to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity to authorities.
We will continue to follow this case and provide updates as more information becomes available. The full extent of Tackett’s involvement in the distribution of these substances remains to be seen, but one thing is clear: the consequences of his actions will be severe.
This is a developing story, and we will provide further updates as necessary. In the meantime, we urge residents to remain informed and report any suspicious activity to the authorities.
