Lubbock Man Sentenced to Nine Years for Child Pornography
A 40-year-old Lubbock man has been sentenced to nine years in federal prison for his role in a child pornography ring. James Galen Brown, a resident of Lubbock, Texas, was handed down the sentence by U.S. District Judge Sam R. Cummings on March 22, 2013.
Brown admitted to using his cell phone to intentionally send and receive images and videos of child pornography. He used his cell phone’s texting functions to communicate with other individuals who shared an interest in sexually explicit images and videos of minors.
According to court documents, Brown was interviewed by Special Agents with U.S. Immigrations and Customs Enforcement’s (ICE) Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) on June 1, 2012, after receiving information that a telephone number assigned to Brown had received text messages with attachments of child pornography.
Brown told investigators that he used his cell phone to trade the material with other individuals he met in internet chat rooms. He would exchange phone numbers with these individuals and then trade the child pornography images and videos by attaching them to text messages.
This case was brought as part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative launched in May 2006 to combat the growing epidemic of child sexual exploitation and abuse. The project marshals federal, state and local resources to better locate, apprehend and prosecute individuals who sexually exploit children.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Steven M. Sucsy was in charge of the prosecution. Brown’s sentence includes a 10-year term of supervised release, and he is required to surrender to the Bureau of Prisons on March 1, 2013.
The investigation was led by U.S. Immigrations and Customs Enforcement’s (ICE) Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) and was part of a larger effort to crack down on child pornography rings across the country.
