Man Charged in Assault on Federal Officers
An Eagle Butte, South Dakota man has been indicted by a federal grand jury for Assaulting, Resisting, and Impeding Federal Officers; Possession of a Firearm During a Crime of Violence; and Felon in Possession of a Firearm.
Jason Todd Garreau, age 27, was indicted by a federal grand jury on November 5, 2013, for the charges, which carry a maximum penalty of up to life imprisonment and/or a $250,000 fine.
The charges are merely accusations, and Garreau is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty. The investigation is being conducted by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and several other law enforcement agencies.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Meghan N. Dilges is prosecuting the case. Garreau was remanded to the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service and a trial date has not been set.
The maximum penalty upon conviction is up to life of imprisonment and/or a $250,000 fine, 5 years of supervised release, an additional 3 years of supervised release upon revocation, and a mandatory $100 special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund. Restitution may also be ordered.
Garreau appeared before U.S. Magistrate Judge Mark A. Moreno on November 8, 2013, and pled not guilty to the Indictment. The case is ongoing, and further developments will be reported as information becomes available.
The U.S. Attorney’s office emphasizes that the charges are only allegations and that Garreau is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
