Man Sentenced for Possessing Firearm While High

January 12, 2016, will go down as a day of reckoning for Ryan Richard Duckett, a 30-year-old Brighton, Illinois, resident. Duckett was sentenced to 37 months in federal prison for the crime of Unlawful Possession of a Firearm by an Unlawful User of a Controlled Substance.
The U.S. District Court in Benton handed down the sentence after Duckett was found to have possessed a GP WASR-10/63, 7.62 x 39 mm caliber semi-automatic rifle during a time when he was an unlawful user of controlled substances, namely cocaine and marijuana.
Court records show that Duckett made this admission on February 6, 2013, in Brighton, Illinois, Jersey County. The case was a result of a joint investigation by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Drug Enforcement Administration.
The case is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney William E. Coonan. As part of the sentence, Duckett was also ordered to pay a fine of $600.00 and a special assessment of $100.00, to be followed by three years of supervised release.
