Michael Malone, Possession of a Firearm by a Convicted Felon, Louisiana 2023

A Covington man has been sentenced to 82 months of imprisonment for possessing 33 firearms in violation of the Federal Gun Control Act.

According to court records, MICHAEL MALONE, 38, was sentenced on January 10, 2023, in the United States District Court for his plea of guilty to a one-count indictment charging him with Possession of a Firearm by a Convicted Felon in violation of Title 18, United States Code, Sections 922(g)(1) and 924(a)(2).

United States District Court Judge Greg G. Guidry imposed the sentence, which included a mandatory special assessment fee of $100.00. MALONE will also serve three years of supervised release following his term of imprisonment.

The arrest occurred on February 3, 2022, at approximately 11:30 p.m., when St. Tammany Parish deputies were on patrol on Highway 434 in Lacombe and observed MALONE’s silver Toyota Highlander parked in front of the 434 Mini Storage.

Deputies approached the vehicle and spoke with MALONE’s girlfriend, who told them that MALONE was inside his storage unit. As they continued to approach the unit, they heard the sound of a gun being racked. Upon opening the door to the storage unit, the deputies observed MALONE in possession of a firearm and located 33 firearms inside the unit.

It was determined that MALONE was on probation at the time of his arrest and was a convicted felon with two convictions for possession of Methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA) (ecstasy), simple burglary of an inhabited dwelling, and two counts of simple burglary.

The case is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a program aimed at reducing violent crime and gun violence. The case was investigated by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives and the St. Tammany Parish Sheriff’s Office. It is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Brittany Reed of the Violent Crime/Strike Force Unit of the U.S. Attorney’s Office.
