Okoye Jabrayll Day, Felon Firearm Possession, Alabama 2024

MOBILE, AL – Okoye Jabrayll Day, a 23-year-old Mobile man, was sentenced to 60 months in federal prison for illegally possessing a firearm as a convicted felon during a botched home invasion. The incident occurred on April 16, 2024, at an apartment complex where Day and several others attempted to break into a victim’s residence.

According to court documents, the police responded to a call from the victim, who reported being shot at by armed intruders. Another resident also called 911 after hearing gunshots. When officers arrived, they found one of the suspected burglars dead outside the victim’s apartment, having sustained a gunshot wound. Day was arrested nearby after throwing a loaded Glock .45 caliber pistol into bushes.

In his interview with police, Day claimed to have carried the gun for self-protection due to prior shooting and paralysis. He admitted disposing of the weapon in bushes because he was under supervision for prior convictions. Day’s previous felony convictions for receiving stolen property and discharging a gun into an occupied building made his possession of the Glock illegal.

United States District Judge Terry F. Moorer also ordered Day to serve a three-year term of supervised release after his prison sentence, during which he will receive mental health evaluation and treatment. The court did not impose a fine but required Day to pay $100 in special assessments and forfeited his firearm and ammunition.

U.S. Attorney Sean P. Costello announced the sentence, which is part of Operation Take Back America, a nationwide initiative targeting illegal immigration, cartels, transnational criminal organizations, and violent crime. The case was investigated by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and the Mobile Police Department, with Assistant U.S. Attorney Justin Roller prosecuting on behalf of the United States.
