HOUSTON – The grim saga of Luis Alfonso Murillo-Soriano, a 31-year-old Mexican national, has reached its conclusion with his sentencing for illegal reentry and heinous sexual misconduct within federal custody.
Murillo-Soriano, who previously faced deportation in 2018 and returned to the United States unlawfully twice more, pleaded guilty on March 8, 2024. Today, U.S. District Judge Keith P. Ellison ordered him to serve 130 months in federal prison for his transgressions.
The hearing revealed disturbing allegations of sexual assault against another inmate and the facilitation of contraband into the facility while Murillo-Soriano was a prisoner. Despite having multiple felony drug convictions involving heroin, cocaine, and methamphetamine, as well as a driving while intoxicated charge, this is not the first time he has returned after being removed from the United States.
Murillo-Soriano’s criminal track record dates back to 2019 when authorities found him distributing four kilograms of heroin just weeks after his deportation. The court expressed grave concern over his repeated offenses and illegal re-entry, which it deemed a serious threat to community safety.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Christine Lu is the lead prosecutor in this case, part of Operation Take Back America – a nationwide initiative aimed at combating illegal immigration and protecting communities from violent crime. The investigation was conducted by Immigration and Customs Enforcement – Enforcement and Removal Operations in conjunction with the Texas Department of Public Safety.
Murillo-Soriano will remain in custody pending transfer to a Federal Bureau of Prisons facility. His sentence marks the culmination of years of law enforcement efforts to hold him accountable for his actions and ensure he does not pose a threat to American citizens.
