Washington – In a stunning revelation from the Jan. 6, 2021, Capitol breach trial, James Weeks, 55, of Sodus, New York, has pleaded guilty to assaulting law enforcement during the infamous riot at the U.S. Capitol. Weeks’ actions, along with those of others, were pivotal in disrupting a joint session of Congress tasked with certifying the 2020 presidential election results.
Weeks faced U.S. District Judge Beryl A. Howell, who will sentence him on September 27, 2024. The charges against Weeks include a felony offense of assaulting, resisting, or impeding certain officers.
Court documents reveal Weeks’ involvement began at approximately 3:02 p.m., when he was seen on video entering the Lower West Terrace Tunnel, a site of significant violence that day. There, he reached through broken glass to confront an MPD officer, spewing profanities and threats before pushing open a door, enabling more rioters access to police lines.
Weeks’ violent behavior didn’t end there. He cheered on fellow rioters as they broke windows at the Northwest Courtyard, using OC spray and a wooden stick to shatter glass panes himself. The FBI arrested Weeks in Albany, New York, on February 1, 2024.
This case is being prosecuted by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Columbia and the Department of Justice National Security Division’s Counterterrorism Section, with valuable assistance from the Western District of New York U.S. Attorney’s Office. The FBI’s Buffalo and Washington Field Offices conducted the investigation, aided by the U.S. Capitol Police and the Metropolitan Police Department.
Since Jan. 6, 2021, over 1,450 individuals have been charged across nearly all states for Capitol breach-related crimes, with more than 500 facing charges of assaulting or impeding law enforcement. The investigation into this national tragedy is ongoing.
