Julian Gonzalez, accused of running a lucrative NYC cocaine trade, is headed to the slammer for 57 months after a jury found him guilty of trying to destroy evidence during a federal investigation.
According to court documents, Gonzalez was intercepted by FBI agents at JFK Airport on March 17, 2023, as he stepped off a flight from an international destination. Agents had a search warrant for his phone, which they say contained crucial evidence of his narcotics trafficking business.
Gonzalez initially cooperated, handing over his phone, but the agents soon discovered that he had been trying to erase incriminating Signal messages related to the sale of one kilogram of cocaine.
Prosecutors say Gonzalez’s actions were a brazen attempt to obstruct justice and undermine the ongoing investigation into his operation.
US Attorney Joseph Nocella and FBI Assistant in Charge James Barnacle welcomed the verdict, vowing to hold accountable those who think they can evade the law.
