Orlando Justin Gomez, Child Pornography, Florida 2014

A Middleburg man has been arrested for possessing child pornography, federal authorities announced.

Orlando Justin Gomez, 54, was taken into custody on a charge of possession of child pornography, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Middle District of Florida.

Gomez, a registered sexual predator, was found to be in possession of multiple images depicting prepubescent minors engaged in sexually explicit conduct, the complaint stated.

The arrest was made by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) as part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative launched in May 2006 to combat the growing epidemic of child sexual exploitation and abuse.

Gomez faces a mandatory minimum penalty of 10 years, up to a maximum penalty of 20 years in federal prison if convicted. A criminal complaint is merely a formal charge that a defendant has committed a violation of the federal criminal laws, and every defendant is presumed innocent unless, and until, proven guilty.

The case is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Diidri Robinson.

Gomez’s arrest is the latest in a series of cases brought by the U.S. Attorney’s Office as part of Project Safe Childhood, which marshals federal, state, and local resources to locate, apprehend, and prosecute individuals who sexually exploit children, and to identify and rescue victims.
