Indianapolis Man Sentenced to 20 Years in Federal Prison for Methamphetamine Trafficking
INDIANAPOLIS, Indiana – In a harsh blow to the city’s ongoing battle with narcotics, 39-year-old Richard Hornsby was sentenced to a lengthy 20-year prison term for his role in trafficking methamphetamine and committing a firearm offense.
According to court documents, Hornsby’s downfall began on December 9, 2020, when troopers with the Indiana State Police initiated a traffic stop on Hornsby for driving with an expired license plate. Further investigation revealed that Hornsby was also driving with an expired license and had a handgun in the vehicle.
During the search of Hornsby’s vehicle, troopers located approximately 175 grams of methamphetamine in the center console and an additional pistol. Hornsby subsequently admitted to possessing the methamphetamine, stating that he intended to sell it, and that he often carries a firearm during times when he would purchase methamphetamine for resale.
The investigation was a collaborative effort between the DEA and the Indiana State Police, with Zachary A. Myers, U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of Indiana, praising the work of Assistant U.S. Attorney Jayson W. McGrath, who prosecuted the case.
U.S. Attorney Myers stated, ‘Assistant U.S. Attorney Jayson W. McGrath’s tireless efforts in this case exemplify the commitment of our office to holding individuals accountable for their crimes.’
As part of Hornsby’s sentence, U.S. District Judge James Patrick Hanlon ordered that he be supervised by the U.S. Probation Office for five years following his release from federal prison. This additional supervision will provide an added layer of accountability for Hornsby as he serves out his sentence.
The harsh sentence imposed on Hornsby serves as a stark reminder of the consequences of engaging in narcotics trafficking and firearm offenses. It is a testament to the dedication of law enforcement agencies and the courts in their efforts to keep our communities safe.
