Double Stabbing Leaves One Dead, Another Injured at USP Hazleton
A vicious attack at the United States Penitentiary Hazleton in Preston County, West Virginia, left one inmate dead and another severely injured on August 29, 2012. The brutal assault occurred when Ruben Laurel, 43, and another inmate repeatedly stabbed and cut Anthony M. Dallas, ultimately taking his life.
Dallas suffered nearly 50 stab wounds, including injuries to his heart, lungs, and liver, making his death a senseless tragedy. Another inmate who was present during the attack also suffered injuries but managed to survive the violent ordeal.
Laurel, who was previously housed at the United States Penitentiary Hazleton, pleaded guilty to aiding and abetting second degree murder and assault with a deadly weapon in the death of Dallas. This guilty plea marked a significant turning point in the case, allowing authorities to hold Laurel accountable for his actions.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Stephen L. Vogrin prosecuted the case on behalf of the government, working tirelessly to ensure that justice was served. The FBI conducted a thorough investigation into the matter, gathering evidence and piecing together the events surrounding the tragic incident.
On Today, Chief U.S. District Judge Thomas S. Kleeh presided over the sentencing hearing, where Ruben Laurel was sentenced to 300 months of incarceration, equivalent to 25 years, for his role in the murder of Anthony M. Dallas.
Laurel is currently housed at the United States Penitentiary Terre Haute in Indiana, where he will serve his sentence. This outcome serves as a reminder that violent crimes will not be tolerated and those responsible will face the full weight of the law.
