Cornell Cordon, a 59-year-old New York man, has been sentenced to 1 year and 6 months in prison for failing to update his sex offender registration after traveling from West Virginia to New Jersey. Cordon was convicted of first-degree sexual abuse of a two-year-old girl in Putnam County, West Virginia, in 2019, and was required to register as a sex offender for life. He was allowed to visit family in Elizabeth, New Jersey, from April 14 to April 21, 2025, but failed to return to West Virginia and did not register as a sex offender in New Jersey or any other state.
The US Marshals Service investigated the case, which was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Jonathan T. Storage. United States District Judge Joseph R. Goodwin imposed the sentence, which also includes 5 years of supervised release.
Cordon’s failure to register as a sex offender is a violation of the Sex Offender Registration and Notification Act (SORNA), which requires registered sex offenders to register and keep their registration current in each jurisdiction where they reside, work, or go to school.
