Physician Sentenced to 25 Years for Prescription Drug Conspiracy

A shocking case of prescription drug abuse has come to an end in Wyoming, with a 57-year-old physician receiving a 25-year prison sentence and five years of supervised release. Shakeel Kahn, a licensed medical doctor, was found guilty of crimes involving drug distribution, firearms possession, and money laundering.

On January 3, U.S. District Court Judge Alan B. Johnson imposed the sentence in Cheyenne. Kahn was convicted by a federal jury on December 15, 2024, following a six-week trial in Casper.

According to court records and trial evidence, Kahn operated clinics in Casper, Wyoming, and Fort Mohave, Arizona, between 2011 and 2016. During this period, he unlawfully distributed drugs by writing prescriptions for large quantities of opioids without any legitimate medical need in exchange for cash payments from his customers.

Kahn’s actions did not go unnoticed, as he also possessed firearms in furtherance of his unlawful drug distribution. Unfortunately, at least one person died after overdosing on drugs distributed by Kahn.

The United States Supreme Court overturned Kahn’s original convictions, which he was found guilty of in 2019, due to a faulty jury instruction. This led to a retrial, which ultimately resulted in Kahn’s conviction.

The case was investigated by the Drug Enforcement Administration, IRS Criminal Investigation, and the Wyoming Division of Criminal Investigation. First Assistant U.S. Attorney Stephanie I. Sprecher and Assistant U.S. Attorney Seth Griswold prosecuted the case.

The Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Force (OCDETF) brought about the case, which is a federal drug enforcement program overseen by the Attorney General. The principal mission of the OCDETF program is to identify, disrupt, and dismantle the major drug trafficking operations, tackle related crimes, and prosecute those primarily responsible for the nation’s drug supply.

Case No. 17-CR-00029 highlights the severity of prescription drug abuse and the importance of holding individuals accountable for their actions. Shakeel Kahn’s 25-year prison sentence serves as a reminder of the consequences of engaging in such crimes.
