Assault Charges Unfold in Bear Creek Community

Two Martin, South Dakota men have been indicted for brutally assaulting two others with shod feet, a golf club, and a large rock at Bear Creek Community on September 29, 2012.

According to the indictment, Roby Shangreaux, aged 24, and Keith Shangreaux, also known as Dewey Shangreaux, aged 25, are accused of two counts of Assault with a Dangerous Weapon and two counts of Assault Resulting in Serious Bodily Injury.

Both brothers appeared before U.S. Magistrate Judge Veronica L. Duffy on February 25, 2013 and pled not guilty to the indictment. If convicted, each count carries a maximum penalty of 10 years of imprisonment and a $250,000 fine.

The investigation is a joint effort between the Bureau of Indian Affairs, Office of Justice Services, the Oglala Sioux Tribe Department of Public Safety, and the Bennett County Sheriff’s Office.

The defendants were remanded to the custody of the U.S. Marshal and a trial date has been set for April 30, 2013. The charges against them are merely accusations, and they are presumed innocent until proven guilty.

The incident occurred at Bear Creek Community on September 29, 2012. The maximum penalties for each count are 10 years of imprisonment and a $250,000 fine.

The U.S. Attorney’s office urges anyone with information about this case to come forward and assist in the investigation.
