Aditya Humad, Kickback Scheme, Massachusetts 2026

⏱ 3 min read

Aditya Humad, the 41-year-old Chief Financial Officer of SpineFrontier, a former Boston-area spinal implant company, pleaded guilty to a kickback scheme that involved bribing surgeons to use the company’s products in exchange for sham consulting fees. The scheme, which took place in Boston, Massachusetts, involved Humad paying over $540,000 in bribes to surgeons. The goal was to induce them to use SpineFrontier’s products in surgeries paid for by federal health care programs such as Medicare, Medicaid, and the Veterans Health Administration.

Humad entered into contracts with surgeons, agreeing to pay them between $250 and $1,000 per hour for purported consulting work. However, in reality, the surgeons were paid for using SpineFrontier’s products, with little to no actual consulting work performed. The scheme was disguised as a program to gather technical feedback about SpineFrontier’s products, but its true purpose was to bribe surgeons and generate millions of dollars in revenue for the company.

Humad’s guilty plea is the latest development in a case that also involves Dr. Kingsley R. Chin, SpineFrontier’s Founder, President, and CEO. Chin pleaded guilty to making false statements to the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services in May 2025. Humad is scheduled to be sentenced on August 6, 2026, and has already agreed to pay a fine of over $150,000 as part of a civil settlement agreement.

The case highlights the ongoing problem of kickback schemes in the medical device industry, where companies may attempt to bribe healthcare professionals to use their products. The scheme involving SpineFrontier and its executives is a prime example of the type of corruption that can occur when companies prioritize profits over patient care.
