On January 7, 2025, Angel Luis Morales Torres, a 24-year-old Puerto Rican man, sparked chaos on a JetBlue flight preparing for takeoff from Boston to Puerto Rico. As the aircraft taxied down the runway, Morales suddenly stood up, ran down the aisle, and entered an empty emergency exit row. He attempted to open the emergency exit door, prompting a flight attendant to try and restrain him. However, before being tackled by another passenger, Morales managed to open the door, deploying the emergency inflatable slide and rendering the aircraft inoperable.
Morales’ reckless actions put the entire flight at risk, and he now faces serious consequences. He pleaded guilty to one count of damaging or disabling an aircraft, a charge that carries a maximum of up to 20 years in prison, up to three years of supervised release, and a fine of up to $250,000.
The incident highlights the importance of airline safety and the severe penalties for those who compromise it. The FBI and Massachusetts State Police assisted in the investigation, which was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Lauren Maynard of the Criminal Division.
U.S. District Court Senior Judge F. Dennis Saylor scheduled sentencing for August 4, 2026. As Morales awaits his fate, the incident serves as a reminder of the potential dangers that can occur when individuals disregard safety protocols and put others at risk.
