Leidy E. Otero, a 43-year-old woman from Gardner, Massachusetts, pleaded guilty to Social Security fraud in federal court. Otero had been receiving Supplemental Security Income (SSI) disability benefits since 2011, but failed to report that her husband was living with her and earning an income that exceeded the SSI limits. This deception allowed her to continue receiving benefits that she was no longer eligible for. The fraud was discovered, and Otero was charged in April 2026.
Otero’s scheme involved hiding her husband’s income, which would have made her ineligible for SSI benefits if reported. By not disclosing this information, she was able to continue receiving the benefits, resulting in a significant loss to the Social Security Administration. The exact amount of the loss has not been disclosed.
The guilty plea was entered in federal court in Worcester, with U.S. District Court Judge Margaret R. Guzman scheduling sentencing for August 27, 2026. Otero faces up to 10 years in prison for the charge of receipt of stolen government money or property, and up to 5 years in prison for the charge of Social Security fraud – concealment.
The investigation and prosecution of Otero’s case demonstrate the government’s commitment to combating Social Security fraud and protecting the integrity of the system. The Social Security Administration relies on accurate information from beneficiaries to ensure that benefits are distributed fairly and to those who are truly in need.
