Tampa Woman Sentenced to Over 5 Years for Stolen Identity Refund Heist

A Tampa woman has been sentenced to five and six months in federal prison for her role in a brazen stolen identity refund fraud scheme. Nikia Williams, 39, was handed down the sentence by U.S. District Judge James D. Whittemore after she pleaded guilty to theft of government property and aggravated identity theft on February 27, 2013.

As part of her sentence, Williams was ordered to forfeit jewelry valued at more than $110,000, which is traceable to the proceeds of her crimes. She was also required to surrender a 2007 Mercedes Benz, which she purchased using $30,000 in cash.

According to court documents, Williams engaged in the stolen identity tax refund fraud scheme from at least as early as January 2011. During this period, she electronically filed over 150 fraudulent tax returns from her residence. Her illicit activities were linked to additional tax returns based on her use of debit cards containing fraudulently obtained tax refunds.

The investigation into Williams’ crimes was a collaborative effort between the Internal Revenue Service Criminal Investigation, the United States Postal Inspection Service, and the Tampa Police Department. The case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorneys Sara C. Sweeney and Amanda L. Riedel.

Williams’ scheme was a complex and sophisticated operation that resulted in significant financial losses for the government. Her sentence serves as a reminder that those who engage in such crimes will be held accountable for their actions.

The sentencing of Nikia Williams is a significant victory for law enforcement and a deterrent to others who would engage in similar activities. As a community, we must remain vigilant in our efforts to prevent and combat financial crimes.

Tampa, Florida – U.S. District Judge James D. Whittemore has sent a strong message to those who would engage in stolen identity refund fraud: you will be held accountable. The sentence handed down to Nikia Williams is a testament to the tireless efforts of law enforcement and the justice system.
