MUSKOGEE, OKLAHOMA – A grim day in Tahlequah as Jonathon Roy Philpott, 44, pleaded guilty to a serious charge of Unlawful User of Controlled Substance in Possession of Firearms and Ammunition. This charge carries a stiff penalty of up to fifteen years in the slammer and a $250,000 fine.
The court documents, filed by the United States Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Oklahoma, reveal that on February 4, 2025, Philpott was caught with a semi-automatic rifle, a semi-automatic pistol, and a chilling 39 rounds of ammunition. His possession was deemed illegal because he knew full well that he was an unlawful user of controlled substances at the time.
This case was the result of a relentless investigation by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF). The ATF has been tirelessly working to keep our communities safe from such dangerous elements.
U.S. Magistrate Judge D. Edward Snow accepted Philpott’s guilty plea and ordered a presentence investigation report. The final sentence will be decided by a U.S. District Court Judge, taking into account the U.S. Sentencing Guidelines and various statutory factors.
Philpott remains in custody pending his sentencing, with Assistant U.S. Attorney Lewis M. Reagan representing the United States in this case. This sentence sends a stark reminder to those who think they can skirt the law with illegal firearms: justice will not be mocked.
The Tahlequah community is undoubtedly relieved that such a dangerous individual has been taken off the streets, and the ATF’s efforts are commended for their dedication to public safety.
