Cedrick Campbell, a 36-year-old man from Tallahassee, Florida, has been sentenced to three years in federal prison for possessing child pornography. The sentence comes after Campbell pleaded guilty to the charges, which stemmed from an investigation by the Tallahassee Police Department’s Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force and the FBI. The probe revealed that Campbell had used an overseas server to access and store child pornography, in addition to possessing it on his cell phone.
The case against Campbell was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorneys Joseph Ravelo and Meredith Steer, and was part of the nationwide Project Safe Childhood initiative launched by the Department of Justice in 2006. The project aims to combat the growing epidemic of child sexual exploitation and abuse.
U.S. Attorney John P. Heekin stated that those who view, possess, and share child sexual abuse material deserve severe punishment, as they re-victimize the innocent and exploited children each time the images and videos are seen. The FBI’s Jacksonville Special Agent in Charge, Jason Carley, added that every image of child sexual abuse represents the exploitation of a real child, and that these investigations are an opportunity to protect children and hold offenders accountable.
The sentence handed down to Campbell reflects the severity with which law enforcement and the justice system view child pornography offenses. As U.S. Attorney Heekin noted, his office will continue to aggressively prosecute these cases to keep children safe.
