BILLINGS, MT – Ronald Orrin Schultz, Jr., 45, of Terry, Montana, is headed to federal prison for a decade after being sentenced for possessing horrific child sex abuse material. U.S. Attorney Kurt Alme announced today that Schultz received 120 months incarceration, followed by a staggering 30 years of supervised release. He was also slapped with a $100 fine and a $5,000 special assessment, a pittance considering the damage he inflicted just by *having* this material.
Schultz pleaded guilty in April 2025 to one count of possession of child pornography. The case began to unravel on June 18, 2023, when a file containing suspected Child Sex Abuse Material (CSAM) surfaced on the KIK messaging platform. The video depicted a prepubescent male engaged in sexual activity with an adult – a depraved act that triggered the investigation. The associated ‘Cybertip’ led investigators to an IP address, screen name, and email address linked to the KIK account, quickly narrowing the search.
Law enforcement zeroed in on a residence in Terry, Montana, knowing that Schultz, a convicted federal sex offender, lived there. A search warrant was executed on March 14, 2024, and Schultz initially played dumb, claiming ignorance of the KIK platform. But he conveniently pointed out where his electronic devices were located, practically inviting officers to find the evidence. They did. A review of Schultz’s cellphone confirmed his connection to the KIK account, but that was just the beginning.
Further examination of his other electronic media revealed a disturbing pattern: Schultz had a clear interest in minor females and had been engaging in sexually suggestive correspondence with individuals he *believed* were underage. The KIK account was a treasure trove of depravity. Investigators found a limited number of CSAM images, alongside videos of Schultz himself engaged in explicit acts and openly stating his preference for underage girls. He even admitted, in those digital confessions, a willingness to accept jail time as a consequence – a chilling admission of guilt.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Zeno Baucus skillfully prosecuted the case, with crucial investigative work carried out by the Prairie County Sheriff’s Office and the Federal Bureau of Investigation. This wasn’t some accidental download; it was a deliberate, calculated collection of abuse. The sentence, while significant, barely scratches the surface of the harm caused by individuals like Schultz.
This case was brought as part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative launched in 2006 to combat the escalating epidemic of child sexual exploitation and abuse. Led by U.S. Attorneys’ Offices and CEOS, Project Safe Childhood focuses on locating, apprehending, and prosecuting predators who exploit children online, and rescuing the victims.
