Todd Hamilton, the undisputed leader of a Whatcom County-based drug empire, has thrown in the towel. The 35-year-old admitted his guilt today, facing down charges that he masterminded one of the most lucrative drug distribution rings in recent memory. U.S. Attorney Jenny A. Durkan revealed that Hamilton pleaded guilty to conspiracy to distribute controlled substances and possession of a firearm in furtherance of a drug trafficking crime.
The sentence for Hamilton’s crimes is severe; he faces a mandatory minimum of 10 years behind bars for the drug charge alone, with another five-year term for the firearm charge. His attorneys and prosecutors have agreed to recommend a sentence ranging from 16 to 21 years when he appears before U.S. District Judge John C. Coughenour on June 11, 2013.
Hamilton’s reign of terror began in January 2011 after his release from Washington State prison. With a network of distributors and suppliers at his command, he ran a heroin and methamphetamine distribution ring that stretched throughout Whatcom County. His home, raided by law enforcement in December 2011, was found to be a veritable drug den. Meth, heroin, drug ledgers, packaging materials, and a loaded .45 caliber pistol were all recovered.
DEA agents discovered that Hamilton was purchasing several pounds of drugs each week, spending tens of thousands of dollars to flood his community with the illegal substances. His operation wasn’t just about profit; it was a web of corruption that reached into the Department of Corrections. An employee there was caught using his access to confidential information to help Hamilton avoid law enforcement scrutiny.
This case has seen 14 defendants plead guilty, with several already sentenced to five to eight years in prison. The Organized Crime and Drug Enforcement Task Force (OCDETF) played a pivotal role in the investigation, providing critical federal funding to state and local agencies. DEA, Washington State Department of Corrections, ATF, and the Northwest Regional Drug Task Force all contributed to bringing Hamilton’s criminal enterprise to its knees.
Assistant United States Attorneys Jill Otake and Roger Rogoff are handling the prosecution, ensuring that justice is served for the community Hamilton had terrorized. As Hamilton faces his own reckoning, it serves as a stark reminder of the damage done by drug trafficking operations and the relentless efforts of law enforcement to dismantle them.
