Michael Cabassa, a 48-year-old from Torrington, Connecticut, has pleaded guilty to narcotics trafficking and admitted to violating his supervised release. The charges stem from a December 27, 2025, incident where Cabassa was involved in a one-car accident while driving under the influence. A search of his vehicle revealed distribution quantities of cocaine and fentanyl.
Cabassa’s troubles with the law date back to 2007 when he was sentenced to 240 months in prison for trafficking crack cocaine. He was released from prison in January 2025 after receiving an executive grant of clemency. However, his freedom was short-lived, as he was arrested again in May 2026 and has been detained since.
The investigation into Cabassa’s activities was conducted by the Drug Enforcement Administration and the Connecticut State Police. The case is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Jocelyn Courtney Kaoutzanis as part of Operation Take Back America, a nationwide initiative aimed at combating transnational criminal organizations and protecting communities from violent crime.
Cabassa faces a maximum term of imprisonment of 30 years for the narcotics trafficking charge, as well as additional penalties for violating his supervised release. A sentencing date has not been scheduled.
