Altamont Man Pleads Guilty to Federal Drug Charges
In a significant blow to the illicit methamphetamine trade in Southern Illinois, Travis Cole Maxfield, 28, of Altamont, Illinois, has pleaded guilty to federal drug charges. Maxfield’s guilty plea was accepted by the court on February 26, 2014, marking the culmination of a lengthy investigation by law enforcement agencies in the region.
According to the indictment, Maxfield was involved in a conspiracy to manufacture and distribute methamphetamine in St. Clair, Clinton, and Marion Counties between October 2013 and May 2014. Specifically, Maxfield was charged with Conspiracy to Manufacture and Distribute Methamphetamine (Count 1), Manufacture of Methamphetamine on February 26, 2014 in St. Clair County (Count 2), and Distribution of Methamphetamine on March 5, 2014 in Marion County (Count 3).
Maxfield was also charged with Possession of a Listed Chemical (Pseudoephedrine) knowing or having reason to know that it would be used to manufacture methamphetamine (Counts 9 and 10). These charges are all violations of the federal Controlled Substances Act.
The investigation that led to Maxfield’s charges was a collaborative effort involving the FBI, the Marion County Sheriff’s Office, the Clinton County Sheriff’s Department, and other law enforcement agencies in the region.
Maxfield faces a significant prison sentence and fine for his crimes. Under the federal sentencing guidelines, he faces a maximum penalty of not less than 5 years, up to 40 years in federal prison, a $5 million fine, and at least 4 years‘ supervised release for Count 1. Counts 2 and 3 carry a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison, a $1 million fine, and not less than 3 years‘ supervised release. Counts 9 and 10 carry a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison, a $250,000 fine, and 3 years‘ supervised release. All counts require an assessment of $100.
The case is being handled by Assistant United States Attorney Kit Morrissey.
Travis Cole Maxfield’s guilty plea marks a significant victory for law enforcement in their efforts to combat the methamphetamine trade in Southern Illinois.
