Webster Man Guilty of Stealing $234,000 in Government Benefits

BOSTON – In a shocking case of exploitation, 56-year-old David Brunell of Webster, Massachusetts, has pleaded guilty to stealing over $234,000 in government benefits intended for his late father. Brunell, who controlled the bank account into which these funds were deposited, used the stolen money for personal expenses, including mortgage payments.

Between June 2000 and June 2017, the Social Security Administration made a total of $234,000 in retirement benefits, which Brunell had access to due to his control of the account. Brunell’s father had passed away, but Brunell continued to receive the benefits meant for him, instead of turning them over to the correct benefactor.

U.S. District Court Judge Timothy S. Hillman has scheduled sentencing for Brunell on December 13, 2018. Brunell faces a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison, three years of supervised release, and a fine of $250,000. Sentences are determined by the U.S. Sentencing Guidelines and other statutory factors.

United States Attorney Andrew E. Lelling and Scott Antolik, Special Agent in Charge of the Social Security Administration, Office of Inspector General, Office of Investigations, Boston Field Division, made the announcement today. Assistant U.S. Attorney Bill Abely of Lelling’s Worcester Branch Office is prosecuting the case.

The scheme, which lasted nearly two decades, highlights the need for increased accountability and oversight in government programs. Brunell’s actions were a blatant disregard for the trust placed in him by the Social Security Administration and a betrayal of his own father’s trust.

As the investigation and prosecution of this case come to a close, the community can take comfort in knowing that justice will be served. Brunell’s guilty plea serves as a reminder that those who exploit government systems will be held accountable for their actions.

The case is a stark reminder of the importance of transparency and accountability in government programs. It also highlights the need for individuals to report suspicious activity and to hold public officials accountable for their actions.
