Weirton Man Sentenced for Unlawful Firearms Possession
A Weirton, West Virginia man has been sentenced to 51 months in prison for unlawful possession of firearms, according to a recent court ruling. Ian K. Saunders, 35, was found in January 2014 to be in possession of four rifles and two pistols. Saunders, who is addicted to heroin, was discovered with the firearms during an investigation.
As part of the plea agreement, Saunders had previously pled guilty in August 2014 to one count of “Unlawful Drug User and Addict in Possession of a Firearm.” The charge stemmed from Saunders’ heroin addiction and the possession of the firearms, which is a serious offense. Saunders was ordered to pay restitution in the amount of $8,000.00 as part of his sentence.
Prosecuting the case on behalf of the government was Assistant U.S. Attorney Stephen Vogrin. The investigation was conducted by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms, the Brooke County Sheriff’s Department, and the Weirton Police Department. Senior U.S. District Judge Frederick P. Stamp presided over the case.
