Afghan national Rahmanullah Lakanwal, 30, is accused of ambushing and killing National Guard member Specialist Sarah Beckstrom, 20, near the White House in Washington D.C. on November 26. Lakanwal allegedly opened fire without provocation at 17th and I Streets, NW, shooting Beckstrom and Sgt. Andrew Wolfe in the head. Two nearby officers subdued the suspect. Lakanwal had driven from his home in Bellingham, Washington, with a stolen firearm.
The attack occurred at about 2:13 p.m. near the Farragut West Metro Station. Investigators recovered a .357 Smith & Wesson revolver that had been reported stolen in Seattle in 2022. Lakanwal remains charged with first-degree murder while armed, assault with intent to kill while armed, and possession of a firearm during a crime of violence.
Lakanwal was arraigned on a 17-count Superseding Indictment, which includes charges eligible for the death penalty. The Department of Justice’s Capital Case Committee will review the case to determine whether to seek the death penalty. U.S. Attorney Jeanine Ferris Pirro vowed to pursue every penalty the law permits to seek justice for Beckstrom and Wolfe.
