Jay Edward Thompson, Online Child Exploitation, AR 2020

FAYETTEVILLE, AR – Jay Edward Thompson, 43, of Winslow, Arkansas, is headed to federal prison for a decade after being convicted of attempting to exploit a child online. Thompson received a 120-month sentence today, followed by five years of supervised release, after a federal jury found him guilty in March 2020. The sentence was handed down by U.S. District Judge Timothy L. Brooks.

The case originated with a coordinated operation in September 2019, spearheaded by the Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) Internet Crimes Against Children (ICAC) Task Force, the Arkansas State Police, and local law enforcement. Investigators strategically placed online advertisements designed to lure predators, a grim but necessary tactic in the fight against child exploitation.

On September 25, 2019, Thompson took the bait. Responding to one of the advertisements with his email address, he initiated contact with an undercover investigator posing as a 13-year-old female. The next day, Thompson attempted to arrange a meeting with the UC, and was immediately taken into custody, ending his brief foray into the darkness.

Federal prosecutors presented a solid case, leading to Thompson’s indictment in November 2019 and, ultimately, his conviction. Acting U.S. Attorney David Clay Fowlkes for the Western District of Arkansas announced the sentencing, emphasizing the department’s commitment to protecting children from online predators. “This sentence sends a clear message: those who prey on children will be relentlessly pursued and brought to justice,” a source close to the investigation stated.

The investigation was a collaborative effort, involving the Department of Homeland Security, the ICAC Task Force, and the Benton County Sheriff’s Department. Assistant U.S. Attorneys Carly Marshall, Amy Driver, and Dustin Roberts skillfully prosecuted the case, ensuring Thompson faced the full weight of the law. This wasn’t a complicated case, investigators say – just a predator exposed.

Thompson’s conviction serves as a stark reminder of the dangers lurking online. Authorities urge parents and guardians to remain vigilant and report any suspicious online activity. The ICAC Task Force continues to operate nationwide, working tirelessly to identify and dismantle networks of child predators and bring them to justice. This case underscores the critical importance of these ongoing efforts.
