King County Correctional Facility Faces Major Reform After Federal Investigation

SEATTLE – Federal prosecutors have reached a comprehensive agreement with King County to overhaul conditions at the troubled King County Correctional Facility. The move follows an extensive federal probe that exposed serious civil rights violations within the facility.

In a statement, Acting Assistant Attorney General Grace Chung Becker praised King County for their cooperation but emphasized the necessity of immediate reforms. ‘We commend the leadership for their commitment to improve conditions at the jail,’ said Becker. ‘However, the agreement today ensures that the law is upheld and constitutional standards are met.’

The probe identified severe shortcomings in medical care, disease prevention, security measures, and suicide prevention protocols. The proposed agreement mandates a series of measures to rectify these deficiencies and align services with legal requirements.

Investigations like this one are conducted under the Civil Rights of Institutionalized Persons Act, which empowers the federal government to address systemic abuses. The Civil Rights Division has successfully resolved similar cases in several states, including Arkansas and Georgia.

This is not the first time the Department of Justice has intervened in correctional facilities across the country. Since 2001, they have initiated over 97 investigations into various institutions, including juvenile detention centers and nursing homes.
