On the chilly evening of March 4, 1914, Carson City was shaken to its core when a deadly pistol duel left a bandit dead and the community reeling. The tragic event unfolded at the home of Louis Jilla, owner of the Visli Meat Company barn in Smith’s Ranch, outside of Carson City. Jilla had been held up by the unidentified bandit, who had bound and gagged him, leaving him tied to a heavy timber in the barn. The brazen thief had also bound George Wilson, a friend of Jilla’s, in the bedroom upstairs, threatening to wait for him to return and extract his money. Wilson, however, had managed to escape the clutches of his captor and was not harmed. The police were called to the scene, but by the time they arrived, the bandit had already met his maker. The authorities were left to investigate the crime scene, where they found the lifeless body of the bandit, riddled with bullet holes, including one that had pierced his clothing, indicating a close-range shot. The exact circumstances surrounding the duel are still shrouded in mystery, but one thing is certain – the people of Carson City will never forget this fateful night.
