ELYRIA, OH – Jeremy Mack, 38, of Elyria, is facing a lengthy prison sentence after a federal jury found him guilty on all nine counts related to a brutal human trafficking operation and a string of accompanying crimes. The verdict, delivered after a weeklong trial, details a calculated scheme where Mack forced four women, including a 16-year-old girl, into sex work to pay off fabricated drug debts.
The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Ohio detailed how Mack, along with accomplice Ashley Onysko, 24, of Avon Lake, conspired between December 2012 and April 9, 2013, to supply heroin and cocaine to the victims. Once debts were established, Mack allegedly used force, threats, fraud, and coercion to compel the women into commercial sex acts. The pair brazenly advertised the victims on backpage.com using an account they created specifically for the purpose, according to the indictment.
The evidence presented at trial painted a harrowing picture of Mack’s control. One victim, identified as a 16-year-old minor, was given cocaine at Mack’s residence in Elyria in March 2013, and then strong-armed into sex work, with all proceeds funneled directly to Mack. The indictment further alleges that Mack routinely brandished a firearm in front of three of the victims and physically assaulted one, choking her and threatening to kill her. The level of depravity detailed in court documents is staggering.
The charges against Mack were extensive: Count 1, conspiracy to force the victims into commercial sex acts; Counts 2-5, forcing each victim into sex acts; Counts 6 and 7, distribution of heroin and cocaine; and Counts 8 and 9, obstruction of justice. The obstruction charges stem from Mack’s attempts to silence witnesses, including advising his son, T.L., to “stick to the script” during grand jury testimony. He also allegedly provided money to Onysko to purchase gifts for one of the victims and to intimidate her into remaining silent, explicitly telling her not to “flip” or cooperate with the FBI.
“With today’s verdict, Jeremy Mack’s time roaming our community and preying on the most vulnerable will finally come to an end,” declared U.S. Attorney Steven M. Dettelbach. FBI Special Agent in Charge Stephen D. Anthony added, “Thankfully, Mr. Mack will not be able to prey on and victimize children from where he is — behind bars.” Elyria Police Chief Duane Whitely hailed the case as a testament to the effectiveness of collaboration between local and federal law enforcement.
U.S. District Court Judge Sara Lioi has scheduled sentencing for May 29. Mack faces a substantial prison term. Onysko previously pleaded guilty to charges related to her involvement in the conspiracy. Assistant U.S. Attorneys Bridget M. Brennan and Carole Skutnik prosecuted the case, stemming from a joint investigation by the FBI and the Elyria Police Department. This case serves as a grim reminder of the pervasive threat of human trafficking and the urgent need for continued vigilance.
