GRIMY TIMES EXCLUSIVE: Ernesto Ivan Lazo-Rodriguez, also known as Daniel Mancero, has been sentenced to 24 months in federal prison for lying about his past during the process of seeking American citizenship. The 35-year-old former Salvadoran national was caught red-handed when he misrepresented himself to the United States Citizenship and Immigration Service.
Lazo-Rodriguez first came to the U.S. as a permanent resident in 1993. He later returned under his alias, Daniel Mancero, and was convicted of Aggravated Robbery in Texas. After being removed by ICE in 2000, he somehow managed to return and apply for naturalization. During his interview with the USCIS on July 18, 2012, Lazo-Rodriguez denied any previous arrest or deportation.
United States Attorney David J. Hickton announced the sentence imposed by Judge Mark R. Hornak. Assistant U.S. Attorney Shardul S. Desai led the prosecution against Lazo-Rodriguez. Hickton also commended ICE for their diligent investigation that resulted in the successful prosecution of this case.
Despite his initial deceit, Lazo-Rodriguez’s lies caught up with him when USCIS discovered his true identity and prior criminal record. His fraudulent attempt to obtain citizenship has now been punished with a significant prison term.
The sentence underscores the serious consequences faced by those who attempt to deceive immigration authorities, reminding the public of the strict enforcement of laws designed to protect the integrity of the naturalization process.
