Greensburg Postal Worker Indicted in Mail Theft

PITTSBURGH, Pa. – A trusted cog in the U.S. Postal Service is now facing the weight of federal charges after being indicted for pilfering mail, authorities announced today. Christopher L. Demorest, Sr., 39, of Greensburg, Pa., stands accused of betraying the public trust and lining his pockets with personal correspondence.

The two-count indictment, handed down on March 5, alleges that Demorest, a Postal Service employee, actively embezzled greeting cards entrusted to his care for delivery. The first incident reportedly occurred around March 29, 2012, when Demorest allegedly made off with a single greeting card. Less than a month later, on or about April 25, 2012, the indictment claims Demorest swiped two more greeting cards – a pattern of theft that has landed him in federal court.

United States Attorney David J. Hickton didn’t mince words when announcing the indictment. The charges represent a serious breach of duty for someone sworn to protect the mail, not steal from it. While the specific contents of the stolen cards remain undisclosed, the act itself is a federal offense with potentially steep consequences.

If convicted, Demorest faces a maximum total sentence of 10 years behind bars, a hefty fine of $500,000, or a combination of both. However, the actual sentence will be determined by Federal Sentencing Guidelines, taking into account the severity of the crime and any prior criminal history Demorest may have. Assistant United States Attorney Mary McKeen Houghton will be leading the prosecution in this case.

The investigation, which led to Demorest’s indictment, was spearheaded by the United States Postal Service, Office of Inspector General. They meticulously pieced together the evidence, bringing this case to light. It’s a stark reminder that even those in positions of trust are not above the law, and that the OIG takes mail theft seriously.

It is crucial to remember that this indictment is merely an accusation. Demorest is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. He will have the opportunity to defend himself against these charges, and the justice system will ultimately determine his fate. Grimy Times will continue to follow this case and report on any developments as they unfold.
