George Orbin Guilty of Child Sex Abuse Videos

PITTSBURGH — A 61-year-old Pittsburgh man, George Orbin of Allegheny County, was found guilty by a jury of producing and possessing grotesque videos of children subjected to sexual abuse. The conviction, delivered in federal court, marks the end of a years-long investigation into a predator who systematically exploited minors for the creation of illegal sexual imagery.

Orbin was convicted on seven counts stemming from a Superseding Indictment that detailed his repeated abuse of power and manipulation of children. According to court records, on or about December 10, 2011, April 8, 2013, June 10, 2013, and June 11, 2013, Orbin used coercion, enticement, and persuasion to force minors into sexually explicit acts, all for the purpose of filming the abuse. Each instance represents a deliberate, calculated violation of innocence captured on digital media.

The indictment goes further, alleging Orbin attempted to produce more child sex abuse material on or about August 11, 2012, and June 3, 2013. These attempts show a pattern of predatory behavior that stretched across years. Then, on September 10, 2013, he was caught knowingly possessing computer files containing videos and images of minors as young as under 12 engaging in sexually explicit conduct—material he had no legal right to create, view, or store.

The law is unflinching in its response: Orbin now faces a maximum total sentence of 190 years in federal prison and a fine of $1,750,000. Under the Federal Sentencing Guidelines, the final sentence will reflect the severity of his crimes and any prior criminal history. Given the nature of the offenses, prosecutors and law enforcement expect a sentence at or near the maximum allowed.

Assistant United States Attorneys Jessica Lieber Smolar and Heidi Grogan led the prosecution, presenting evidence that left the jury of four men and eight women with no doubt of Orbin’s guilt. The case was built through a joint investigation by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Allegheny County District Attorney’s Office—agencies that dismantled Orbin’s criminal footprint piece by digital piece.

This case was prosecuted under Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide Department of Justice initiative launched in May 2006 to combat child sexual exploitation. Task forces under this program combine federal, state, and local efforts to hunt down offenders and rescue victims. For more information, visit www.justice.gov/psc. In Pittsburgh, Orbin’s conviction sends a message: predators will be found, tried, and buried under the weight of justice.
