Nicholas J Patten, Cocaine Trafficking, NH 2024

Nicholas J. Patten, 27, of Williston, Vermont, is headed to federal prison for 48 months after being sentenced on charges of possessing cocaine with intent to distribute and illegally handling a firearm as a drug user. The sentence, handed down in Concord, marks the end of a case rooted in a chilling roadside collapse that exposed a mobile drug arsenal.

On February 11, 2018, a New London police officer pulled over to assist a stranded motorist and found Patten slumped behind the wheel, barely conscious. Inside the vehicle, needles, rubber tourniquets, a syringe, and white powder littered his jeans and the center console. As officers approached, Patten bolted upright, screaming, “Help,” “I’m drowning,” and “I’m trapped,” before admitting he had used cocaine and didn’t know what else was in his system.

A search warrant executed at the scene uncovered 191.8 grams of cocaine, fentanyl, oxycodone, and smaller quantities of additional cocaine stashed throughout the car. Authorities also seized $4,420 in cash and a loaded Smith & Wesson 9mm pistol — a lethal combination that triggered federal firearm enhancements.

Patten pleaded guilty on January 29, 2019, to possession of a controlled substance with intent to distribute and possession of a firearm and ammunition by an unlawful drug user. The charges carry stiff penalties under federal law, especially when drugs and weapons are found together in active trafficking scenarios.

“Drugs and guns are a potentially deadly combination,” said U.S. Attorney Scott W. Murray. “Armed drug traffickers present a heightened risk to the public. Through Project Safe Neighborhoods, we are working to ensure that criminals who possess guns are prosecuted and incarcerated.”

The investigation was led by the New London Police Department and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. Assistant U.S. Attorney Debra M. Walsh prosecuted the case. The conviction is part of ATF’s Project Safe Neighborhoods, a federally funded initiative targeting gun violence through aggressive prosecution, law enforcement collaboration, and community outreach.
