Ethan Porter, Illegal Firearm Possession, Cedar Rapids IA, 2024

CEDAR RAPIDS, IA – Ethan Porter, 33, is headed to federal prison for over nine years after admitting to possessing a handgun while battling drug addiction and with a history of violent offenses. Porter was sentenced Wednesday, January 18th, to 110 months behind bars after pleading guilty to being a prohibited person in possession of a firearm last July.

Court records show Porter was found with a Taurus pistol in June 2022, a clear violation of federal law given his extensive criminal background. He’s a convicted felon – not once, but three times – and also has a misdemeanor conviction for domestic violence. These prior convictions legally barred him from owning or possessing any firearm.

U.S. District Court Judge C.J. Williams handed down the sentence in Cedar Rapids, making clear that Porter’s actions posed a serious threat to public safety. The 110-month sentence is followed by a mandatory three-year term of supervised release, meaning Porter will be monitored even after he leaves prison. There’s no chance for parole in the federal system.

Federal authorities say this case is part of “Project Safe Neighborhoods,” a Department of Justice initiative aimed at reducing violent crime. The program focuses on targeting the most dangerous offenders and working with local partners to address the root causes of violence. It’s a standard talking point, but the result is a violent offender off the streets.

The investigation was a collaborative effort between the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), the Cedar Rapids Police Department, the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation, and the High Risk Unit of the Sixth Judicial District Department of Correctional Services. Assistant U.S. Attorney Mark Tremmel prosecuted the case. Case file number CR 23-6 is available for review.

Porter’s sentence sends a message: those with a history of violence and drug use who illegally possess firearms will face serious consequences. The Grimy Times will continue to follow this case and report on the ongoing efforts to combat gun violence in Iowa and across the nation.
